San Francisco supervisor wants to ensure city is ready for Fleet Week crowds

A San Francisco supervisor held a hearing Thursday to make sure the city is prepared for expected massive crowds for Fleet Week. Supervisor Stephen Sherrill said San Francisco underestimated crowds at both a 4th of July celebration and Formula 1 demonstration, which triggered problems and even bigger gridlock in the city. “I heard they are assuming there will be larger crowds and I think that’s a great start,” Sherrill said of the city’s preparation for Fleet Week, which includes 20% more porta potties and 30% more capacity for MTA service. “What I want to make sure happens is that there is real-time coordination to understand if there are any traffic impacts.” The supervisor also said the city is coordinating with rideshare and autonomous vehicle companies to manage where they can and can’t drop off and pick up riders. A public affairs officer for San Francisco Fleet Week said after producing the event for 45 years, they are confident in their planning process and expect another successful celebration. Multiple businesses burglarized in Danville

At least 11 businesses in Danville were burglarized early Tuesday morning, leaving owners on edge. Xu Xia, a worker at Hashiya Sushi, came to work Tuesday morning to find the newly opened sushi restaurant had been burglarized. Surveillance video shows three men dressed in hoodies smashing through the front door and going straight to the cash register which fortunately was nearly empty. The burglars smashed into a neighboring Vietnamese restaurant, also going straight for the cash. In the same shopping center, they smashed their way into a nail salon, also Asian owned. “I think they probably thought they probably thought Asians had more cash in the store,so that’s why they target mostly Asian restaurants,” Xia said. Across the street, three more businesses were hit: a Thai restaurant, a Greek restaurant and another sushi spot. On the other side of town, burglars targeted five more businesses, including a hair salon. Stylist Connie Palomino says, surprisingly, the only thing they took was one of the surveillance cameras and some snacks. She speculates all the break-ins worked up an appetite. The burglars also loaded up with liquor at Los Panchos Mexican Restaurant and tried to break the cash register. Thieves also hit a kebab restaurant, a Domino’s and an Indian eatery. The burglary spree has business owners on edge. Many are asking for more police protection. NBC Bay Area reached out to Danville police but has not heard back.

Benicia receives $40M from Valero refinery pollution penalties

A small East Bay community is receiving tens of millions of dollars after a local refinery polluted the air. The Bay Area Air District announced Thursday at a news conference at the Benicia Community Center that $30 million will go to the city, while the remaining $10 million will go to the local school district. The money comes from penalties paid by the Valero refinery after it settled claims that the facility exceeded emissions standards for more than 10 years. The refinery shut down in April. This marks the first time the Air District has reinvested fines directly into communities affected by pollution. NBC Bay Area’s Bob Redell has the full report in the video above.

Top U.S. doctors offer updated flu and COVID vaccine recommendations

Leading U.S. medical groups are urging people to get updated flu and COVID-19 vaccinations this fall, banding together Wednesday to issue shot guidelines — and highlight the science behind them — saying they hope to ease confusion caused by the Trump administration’s changing advice. Flu vaccinations are beginning and COVID-19 shots are starting to arrive after the Food and Drug Administration approved this year’s updated versions last week. Winter also brings another vaccine-preventable risk called RSV. Exactly who should get one or all of these vaccines, and when? That advice usually comes from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, with help from its independent advisers. But despite no new scientific evidence, Trump health officials last year began pulling back on some longstanding recommendations for fall virus protection and routine children’s vaccinations. And that advisory panel, which influences state and insurance vaccine policies, is caught in a court battle. The CDC didn’t respond to questions about any new fall guidance but suggested on its website that doctors follow last year’s flu recommendations. Doctors’ groups are filling the gap: the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Academy of Family Physicians, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the Infectious Diseases Society of America each released vaccination guidelines for their patient populations. “There’s been a lot of confusion and chaos regarding vaccine recommendations,” said Dr. Sandra Fryhofer, of the American Medical Association. All the groups’ recommendations plus evidence on shot safety and effectiveness are being posted on websites so “the public has clear, consistent, science-based guidance even while the federal process is in flux,” Fryhofer said. Vaccines Aug 17 U.S. school vaccination rates drop yet again as exemptions reach new high Vaccines Aug 6 FDA approves Moderna's first mRNA flu vaccine Just about everyone should get vaccinated against flu Just about everybody starting at age 6 months needs flu vaccination, the medical societies agree. But flu is particularly dangerous for people 65 and older, pregnant women, young children and people of any age who have chronic health problems, including asthma, diabetes, heart disease and weak immune systems. The last two flu seasons were especially harsh, with unusually high numbers of child deaths — the vast majority of them in unvaccinated kids. The vaccines don’t block all flu infections but they do help prevent the worst outcomes, decreasing older adults’ hospitalizations by 31%, according to the Vaccine Integrity Project, a public health group based at the University of Minnesota. Its analysis was published Wednesday in the medical journal JAMA. Here’s how to pick from the multiple flu vaccine options Three “enhanced” flu vaccines are designed to better protect seniors. The American Academy of Family Physicians urges them to choose one — “but do not delay your vaccination if that one’s not available,” said AAFP’s Dr. Sarah Nosal. There’s a new choice this year for people ages 50 and older, the first flu vaccine made with the same mRNA technology that was key to ending the COVID-19 pandemic. One study found Moderna’s mFlusiva was 27% more effective against symptomatic illness among 50- to 64-year-olds than a standard shot. The FDA just approved the new option and the company expects some doses to be available soon at certain pharmacies. The shot-averse could choose a nasal spray, FluMist, if they’re ages 2 to 49 and meet other health criteria. The latest on COVID-19 vaccines COVID-19 shots once were recommended for just about everyone by federal health agencies, but like last year, the FDA has only formally approved them for higher-risk people — those ages 65 and older or younger people with at least one health condition that increases their risk. Still, the family physicians recommend all…

Traveling for Labor Day? Expect to pay more this year

Millions of Americans are fitting in one last summer trip this Labor Day weekend, but travelers should expect to pay more whether they’re flying or hitting the road. Travel picked up Thursday, with the Federal Aviation Administration expecting it to be the busiest day for air travel over the holiday weekend with nearly 54,000 flights. The number of flights is expected to dip slightly Friday to fewer than 53,000. Saturday is expected to be a calmer travel day with fewer than 40,000 flights before air travel picks up again as people begin returning home. According to AAA, domestic flights are costing about 2% more this Labor Day weekend compared with last year, though fares to some popular destinations are up as much as 20%. As for hitting the road, more than 45 million people are expected to drive to their destinations for the three-day weekend. Most of those taking a road trip will be paying a premium to fill up gas tanks. AAA said as long as there is instability along the Strait of Hormuz, gas prices will remain high and unstable. The agency reports gas prices this weekend are $1.18 higher than the same time last year. Morgan Hill summer camp counselor accused of sexually assaulting 10-year-old girls

A Gilroy man accused of sexually assaulting three 10-year-old girls while working as a summer camp counselor is scheduled to be arraigned Friday. Anthony Joseph Ramon faces five counts of felony child molestation for attacks the district attorney claims took place in June at a Morgan Hill swim center. The 25-year-old Ramon was arrested three different times for each alleged assault. Prosecutors not only want him to be held accountable, but also want to know why Ramon was allowed to post bail after each arrest. Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen intends to ask the judge to hold Ramon on no bail during Friday’s formal arraignment on multiple assaults. “Bail should always be about protecting public safety,” Rosen said in a statement. “The idea that a person suspected of sexually abusing multiple children should get the same chance at freedom as a person accused of mail fraud or some other non-violent crime is wrong, and dangerous.” Santa Clara County Aug 31 DA seeks to try teen suspect in deadly mass shooting near Morgan Hill as an adult Gilroy Aug 16 ICE says proposed detention facility near Gilroy might hold up to 10 detainees at a time Legal analyst Steven Clark said Ramon was allowed to post bail because each arrest occurred separately. “Now that the cases will be consolidated in one place, that’s where I think the court will the say ‘He’s now facing a life sentence and no bail is allowed,'” Clark said. “But for the defense, they’re gonna say that he has made his court appearance that he posted enough bail to secure both his appearances. He’s not a flight risk and he is presumed innocent.” Ramon was a counselor for YMCA Silicon Valley when he worked a school summer camp field trip to the Morgan Hill Aquatic Center. In the weeks following, police arrested Ramon repeatedly after three individual 10-year-old girls came forward — one by one — claiming he molested them in the pool. Police said the case is an active investigation and are still looking for more possible victims.
