‘Receiver at heart’ Charles Woods keeps coming up big for Patriots

Charles Woods did it all during his final season at Kimball High School in Dallas, including catching the ball 35 times. Nine years later, he got an opportunity to once again put his receiving talent to good use.

With the New England Patriots leading 23-13 in the fourth quarter against the New York Jets on Sunday, Woods was responsible for the field side zone on a 1st-and-10. Tight end Kenyon Sadiq’s route took him into precisely that zone, and quarterback Geno Smith — feeling quick pressure from rookie edge Gabe Jacas — decided to go that way.

For Woods, this was a gift his entire NFL career in the making.

“We were playing in zone. I had great odds. Two defenders broke out on the corner. I didn’t know Geno was going to throw it up, but I made a play,” he said.

“In my heart, I still think I play offense. I still think I’m a receiver at heart.”

Woods getting the opportunity to catch his first career interception came not just as a result of his personal history, but also the circumstances. New England, after all, has struggled with injuries this season at cornerback; both Christian Gonzalez and Carlton Davis have missed time, with the latter out on Sunday due to a neck injury.

As a result, Woods found himself part of the starting lineup for a second time this season and is now up to 50.7% of defensive snaps — third among all Patriots cornerbacks behind only Marcus Jones and Christian Gonzalez. His high snap total might be the result of him getting bumped up the depth chart due to injury, but he also earned it with some solid play.

“He’s been playing good football all year,” said safety Kevin Byard. “He’s a starting corner in this league, so I’m just happy that, when he gets in there and plays, he’s been taking advantage of the opportunity.”

“I’m not trying to chase plays these last few weeks,” Woods added. “I’m just letting it come to me and it finally came to me. It’s a blessing. I was excited. I was really excited to see how my teammates were excited for me. Everybody was smiling and happy. That really made me happy.”

Woods had every reason to be happy on Sunday. Not only did he catch his first interception since turning pro as a rookie free agent with the Rams in 2024, he also helped the Patriots secure a 26-19 win. In addition, he received a game ball from head coach Mike Vrabel in the postgame locker room.

“It’s big for him. Getting an opportunity, never knowing when the opportunity’s going to come. But when the opportunity comes, taking advantage of it,” said defensive tackle Milton Williams after the game.

“With Gonzo and CD being out, he never knows where he’s going to be at, how many snaps he’s going to play. But in the right spot, executing when he’s supposed to, and when the ball comes to you, make a play. I was happy for him, proud of him. And we needed it. We needed it bad. So, kudos to him. I hope he enjoys himself tonight.”
