A small East Bay community is receiving tens of millions of dollars after a local refinery polluted the air.
The Bay Area Air District announced Thursday at a news conference at the Benicia Community Center that $30 million will go to the city, while the remaining $10 million will go to the local school district.
The money comes from penalties paid by the Valero refinery after it settled claims that the facility exceeded emissions standards for more than 10 years.
The refinery shut down in April.
This marks the first time the Air District has reinvested fines directly into communities affected by pollution.
