San Francisco gave a warm welcome to the new Alioto’s Plaza at Fisherman’s Wharf Wednesday, which offers a new public space for people who live, work and visit the area.
“For nearly 100 years, this site was the home to Alioto’s, a restaurant that helped define the wharf. When it closed in March of 2020, the empty building became a visible reminder of what this neighborhood endured during the pandemic,” Mayor Daniel Lurie said.
The plaza expands the view and access to the inner harbor with its rich history. Lurie says the plaza is giving people a reason to return.
The plaza it’s another connection to the water at Fisherman’s Wharf that welcomes tourists, neighbors and workers. The city says more than 15 restaurants and businesses have opened since 2025, and soon a new taproom will open its doors.
“We’ve been looking at Fisherman’s Wharf for a long time, being from the city, I have fond memories and I thought it was some sort of ripe for a rejuvenation and wanted to be part of it,” CEO of Woods Beer and Wine Company Jim Woods said.
Members of the business community think it will be an important feature during Fleet Week and Labor Day. The Port is also looking at the future.
“The Port sees this plaza as step one in plans to continue to invest in seismic resilience and public space regeneration here at wharf this is a plaza a place that respects the wharf’s history while creating new space for what comes next,” Executive Director Port of San Francisco Michael Martin said.
