Nurses are picketing at Kaiser Permanente medical centers across the Bay Area on Tuesday as they seek a new contract and raise concerns about artificial intelligence and staffing.
The informational pickets are not a walkout or work stoppage. Nurses are expected to report for their scheduled shifts, and Kaiser facilities will remain open during normal business hours.
The California Nurses Association, which represents more than 25,000 Kaiser nurses, said the pickets are intended in part to draw attention to concerns about the use of artificial intelligence in hospitals.
Nurses want AI technology to be tested and regulated and are seeking a say in how it is deployed in hospitals.
The union is also raising concerns about what it describes as chronic understaffing at Kaiser hospitals as more work is shifted to remote patient monitoring.
