Gilroy to vote on extending data center development moratorium

The future of data centers in Gilroy will be on the line Monday.

There is currently a temporary moratorium on data center development in the South Bay city after community members pushed back over concerns surrounding water, power, noise and transparency. City staff on Monday are expected to recommend that the council extend the moratorium for 10 months and 15 days.

Many community members say they were not given the opportunity to weigh in on any projects, and they point to the $2 billion Amazon Web Services data center that’s already under construction. That facility would not be impacted by Monday’s decision as it’s going up on 56 acres zoned for heavy industrial.

A lot of community members have been voicing concerns about data center development, as has been the case in other Bay Area communities.

Monday’s City Council meeting starts at 6 p.m. Community members who want to weigh in can attend in person or online.
