Driver arrested after hit-and-run crash seriously injures 2 children in Half Moon Bay

A driver who allegedly fled the scene of a Half Moon Bay collision that seriously injured two 6-year-olds was arrested Saturday night on multiple charges, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to the area of Grandview Boulevard and Golden Gate Avenue at approximately 5:45 p.m. Saturday following a report of a crash. Investigators learned that a vehicle struck two 6-year-olds who were riding bicycles before the driver fled the area.

The two children sustained serious injuries and were transported to a hospital, where they were listed in stable condition.

A witness who saw the collision provided deputies with a description of the driver and vehicle. Following an extensive search, deputies located the vehicle and — with assistance from the Daly City Police Department’s Drone Unit — found the suspect, 37-year-old Robert Schumann of San Francisco, hiding in a wooded area south of Bancroft Avenue.

Investigators found evidence that Schumann was under the influence of alcohol. He was booked into the Maguire Correctional Facility on charges including suspected driving under the influence causing bodily injury, hit-and-run resulting in injury, driving with a suspended license due to a DUI conviction, and operating a vehicle with a blood-alcohol concentration over .01 while on probation.

His vehicle was towed and impounded. Anyone with information is asked to contact the sheriff’s office at 650-363-4911, with anonymous tips accepted at 1-800-547-2700.
