Crash into fire hydrant causes sinkhole in East Haven

A car crashed into a fire hydrant in East Haven on Friday night and caused a sinkhole, according to fire officials.

Emergency crews said a vehicle hit a hydrant at the corner of Taylor Avenue and Bishop Street around 10 p.m.

After the crash, fire officials said the hydrant did not break away as designed and damaged the water main below.

That created a large sinkhole that swallowed up the car and flooded the basement to a nearby home, fire officials added.

Water service to about 10 homes was impacted while repairs were made.

It’s unclear if anyone was injured in the crash.
