Pa. House votes in favor of $15 minimum wage; Shapiro endorses bill

The Pennsylvania House passed a bill to raise the Commonwealth’s minimum wage to $15 per hour on Tuesday.

The minimum wage in Pennsylvania is currently $7.25 per hour, which has been in place since the 2000s.

The bill would gradually increase the minimum wage over several years instead of making the jump at once. However, it is the third year in a row that the House has passed a $15 minimum wage bill. The Pennsylvania Senate has rejected the bill two times in a row, as Republicans there say the rise in minimum would cause rising costs for small businesses and rising prices.

“This is the THIRD year in a row that the House has stepped up to do their part,” Gov. Josh Shapiro wrote on social media after the bill’s passage. “The ball is now in the Senate Republicans’ court. It’s time for them to bring this to a vote and send it to my desk.”
