He was going to make the roster even if he played poorly just because of depth. I think a lot of people posting on here are just reading box scores and other peoples opinions. Probably talking up Ben’s performance in the preseason too much, but he definitely was playing well enough to earn minutes. Offensively he was able to keep his head but looked pitiful on the defensive side of the ball.
Sucks for Ben but ultimately probably a good thing for the Kings. Being forced to play young guys is the only way it happens in Sacramento. Hopefully Christie knows his best chance at another contract is to have the young players mesh well together.
Acuff/Nique/Murray/Max/Sabonis
Those guys are who you’re trying to get to gel. Max looked like he added a bit of weight in the offseason so I might feel a little bit better about him playing the 5 but his lack of rim protection is always going to be brutal to cover up. Love Keegs but I’m like one foot and 3 toes off of that train. He’s never had that drive in him and even now after it’s all on his shoulders, looks timid. Need Nique to figure how to make shots consistently or else this is probably his last real shot on this roster. Of course, he’ll get cut or traded somewhere else and become a nice 6th man for someone, as is the Kings way.
Lack of defense is pretty astonishing but it’s not like adding 1 or 2 defenders was going to take this team from the 12 seed to the 9 seed. They’ll be blown out night after night but we need to see what the first building block is.
