Days before early voting is set to begin, Texas’ voter suspense list climbed to nearly 1.8 million, state figures released Friday show.
That’s about 530,000 more voters than in March, when the state last published the updated voter rolls.
The suspense list has for weeks sown confusion on social media, where some worry it means they were removed from the voter rolls. That is not the case, though.
What is the voter suspense list?
Suspense means your county does not know your address or thinks you moved, typically because a voter registration card or jury summons sent through the mail is returned as undeliverable.
New voter registration cards are mailed every two years to the most recent address on record. If you did not receive a new certification card, it could mean you moved without updating your address.
The list was created more than 30 years ago as a response to the National Voter Registration Act, which requires states to maintain accurate voter rolls. Most states have similar systems in place.
How do I check my status?
Check your registration on the state’s portal or your county’s voter website. Suspended voters will see their status listed as “suspense.”
Early voting begins Monday, Oct. 19 and runs for 12 days until Friday, Oct. 30.
