A walking soccer group in Denton is hoping to score with the community.
“It’s been exciting to see Walking Soccer in the Denton area bring so many ladies together on the soccer pitch especially those that haven’t been able to play the game in sometime,’ organizer Von Hundley said. “Our goal is to see this program grow and make soccer available for anyone that wants to play the game.”
Hundley said they recently started what they believe is one of the first organized walking soccer programs in North Texas for women 45 years old and older.
But how did walking soccer get it’s start in Denton? The introduction was recent.
“I was excited to introduce it to Denton by organizing the first Walking Soccer exhibition game in May 2026 during the Denton Women’s Spring Cup soccer tournament. The game was a huge success which motivated me to explore the possibility of bringing Walking Soccer to Denton on a more permanent basis,” Hundley said.
Her hope is that women feel like its a sport for everyone.
“For some women, its about finding their way back to the sport if they have been away because of injuries, age, or simply because they no longer run like they used to,” Hundley said.
Hundley said walking soccer is designed to be a gentler, more accessible form of soccer, while still providing many of the benefits of staying active. It can help improve balance and strength, reduce stress, support mental well-being, and provide a fun way to socialize and build new connections and friendships.
Walking soccer reportedly started in 2011 in england as a social and health initiative and has since grown in popularity around the world. There are two recorded walking soccer programs in Texas, including Austin and Denton.
She said they have a pool of more than 30 women who play every Sunday at 5:00 p.m. at the Vela Soccer Complex in Denton.
