Voters to decide if Democrat Vikki Goodwin will upset Republican Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick

2026 Midterm Election

Democrat Vikki Goodwin is taking on Republican incumbent Dan Patrick in the 2026 race for Texas Lieutenant Governor.

The Republican incumbent

After three terms, Republican incumbent Dan Patrick is running for re-election in 2026 to continue serving as Texas Lt. Governor.

Patrick has served Texas for 20 years, including an eight-year tenure in the Texas Senate followed by multiple terms as Lt. Governor starting in 2014.

“Lt. Governor Patrick is a leader in the fight to protect liberty, lower property and business taxes, create jobs and grow our economy, strengthen our grid by adding additional reliable thermal power, provide a high-quality education for all, secure our border, support law enforcement, and to protect life, religious freedom, and the Second Amendment,” his website says.

According to the Lt. Governor of Texas official website, Patrick spent nearly 50 years in the media as a television anchor, conservative talk show host, and radio station owner before being elected Lt. Governor.

The Democratic challenger

It may be House Representative Vikki Goodwin’s first time running against Patrick in the race for Texas Lt. Governor, but she’s no stranger to the state’s politics.

State Rep. Goodwin is currently serving her fourth term in the Texas Legislature, where she represents parts of Austin and the Lake Travis area.

“Goodwin’s legislative work is grounded in community input. She regularly meets with constituents, listens to their concerns, and brings their voices to the Capitol. Her advocacy is driven by a belief that good governance requires both fiscal responsibility and compassion—balancing a sound budget with smart investments in education, healthcare, infrastructure, and natural resources,” the Texas House of Representatives website says.

Rep. Goodwin was first elected in 2018, and her leadership is “guided by the belief that Texas can be both economically strong and socially responsible,” according to the Texas House of Representatives website.
