4 things to know about the weather:
- Mostly sunny and hot Tuesday
- Cooler overnight
- Heavy rain possible Thursday
- Rain chances remain into the weekend
Monday’s sunshine helped D.C. reach a high of 94° which was our 42nd day in the 90s this year. That’s eight more 90s this year compared to last but still well off the record pace of 54 days in the 90s back in the summer of 1988.
Most of the D.C. metro will get close to 90° again this afternoon but with considerably lower humidity levels. This slightly drier air will also allow for more overnight cooling.
D.C. hasn’t dropped below 70° yet this month but has a real chance to get there. Areas north and west of Dulles Airport will start off Wednesday morning in the low 60s. That’s close to open-window weather for some.
Sunny skies will return for Wednesday afternoon but that is likely to be our last sunny day until Monday of next week.
Clouds will return Wednesday night and rain chances ramp up quickly after that.

Rain chances return Thursday and continue into the weekend
Most of Thursday’s rain chances are in the afternoon and evening but a stray shower or two can’t be ruled out before noontime. Severe weather isn’t a major concern for Thursday but locally heavy rain is certainly a possibility.
The cold front bringing our Thursday rain chance will settle just to our south for Friday and Saturday with an area of low pressure expected to develop along the boundary. This will keep rain chances relatively high for Friday afternoon and much of the day Saturday.
Rain totals from Thursday into Sunday should be close to 1” for most of the area but totals of 2” to maybe even 2.5” are a possibility for the southern half of the NBC4 viewing area.
Next week still looks to be cooler and less humid with a little hint of a September feel to it.
