I posted this the other day, after having grown tired of all the Draft Allar messages that' have infected this site. I performed a brief analysis of every QB drafted in the first 4 rounds since 2020:
There is no such thing as a "project QB" anymore. Since 2020 (inclusive) there have been 40 QBs drafted in the first 4 rounds: 21 of those were first round picks. Only 4 in the 2nd round; 8 in the 3rd round; and 7 in the 4th. Five of those 1st round QBs were complete busts, a couple more are in the process of busting (or not). Very few have gotten the "Jordan Love Treatment" meaning they sat and watched an entrenched starter (whatshisname 😁) for a couple years until he was ready to excel (which is what Aaron got in waiting for Favre). Guys like Michael Penix were SUPPOSE to have the luxury of an apprenticeship behind an experienced incumbent but ended up rushed into service early (cough Kenny cough). The only "thriving" starter from after the first round was an anomaly - Jalen Hurts lasted into the 2nd in a year that was stacked at QB - Back when I was pounding the table for the Steelers to take Hurts when he fell to us in the 2nd, but we took Chase Clayfool instead. Second-rounder Kyle Trask is emblematic of "draft talent and develop skills" project - he served an apprenticeship behind Tom Brady. And the Bucs were so unimpressed with his development they went out and hired Baker Mayfield, a first round "bust" that bounced around the league until finding his groove in Career Stop #4, in his 6th year in the NFL. QBs drafted in the 3rd are either backups (most) or busts (a few). QBs drafted in 4th are about 50-50 backup to bust ratio...and it's early to round up all the busts.
